Book, Bottle and a Bone

This cute photo sent to us by the owners of Tipper, formerly Tippy, was titled Book, bottle and a bone.  The very nice note accompanying the photo said "Just wanted to let you know that Tipper is doing great. We love love love love love her. She has a lot of energy that is for sure and she gets herself into some trouble/mischief on occassion :)  But she is great with our son Liam and a part of our family."

New face at the shelter

Has there ever been a sweeter face than this?  Reese (as in Reese's Peanut butter cup) is in need of a loving lifetime home.  She was heartlessly abandoned as a pup and spent several days tied to a lamp post before someone rescued her.  She just lost her second home due to her family going through a divorce.  She is a sweet and sensitive dog who is understandably a bit scared to find herself at the shelter and we are hoping a good home comes along soon.

Brady, formerly Linus, settles right in

Apparently Linus, who now goes by the name Brady, doesn't miss his friends at the shelter as much as we all miss him.  We received this cute photo of him relaxing in his new dad's office on his first day (he moved in last night) at home.  He was never this relaxed at the shelter.  Lucky dog!  And as his new family already knows, they are lucky to have such a nice pup.

Today Chico the little Min Pin was adopted, and Luna went home with a friend of her former owner (the owner is in a nursing home and can no longer care for Luna herself).  Our newest canine arrival, Petey the Rat Terrier, is settling in and seems like a very nice and active little dog, true to the breed standard.

Our new feline arrivals, Nigel and Ember, are settling in nicely, especially Nigel who is temporarily living in our lobby while he waits for a space to open up.  That's him in the first photo snoozing on a giant dog bed that is normally used by our Animal Control Officer's dog in the lobby.

More about Linus

Linus is the biggest (he's very tall), goofiest Lab we have had at the shelter in a long time.  He is very lovable when he gets enough exercise, and is going to be a great dog for an active family.  He would be a great friend for another active dog since he loves to run and play.

Yellow Lab

Linus the yellow Lab is the newest face at the shelter.  He was picked up by Animal Control as a stray, so not much is known about his past.  We've been told he is high energy, and we are looking forward to getting to know him so we can find him the perfect family.

Landmark Puppy Mill Reform Bill Passes!

Victory in PA—Landmark Puppy Mill Reform Bill Passes!

PuppyTrying to shed its reputation as “The Puppy Mill Capital of the East,” the Pennsylvania Legislature on Wednesday night passed HB 2525, a bill that will improve the lives of tens of thousands of dogs living in Pennsylvania’s puppy mills.

Introduced in May, HB 2525 doubles the cage space required for dogs in Pennsylvania’s commercial breeding facilities, prohibits wire flooring and the stacking of cages, mandates exercise and twice-yearly veterinary exams for all dogs, and requires that animals be humanely euthanized by licensed veterinarians.

The ASPCA has been working with the Governor’s Office and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture for over three years to increase enforcement and standards of care for dogs in the state’s commercial kennels. We lobbied for passage of HB 2525 by activating the Pennsylvania members of the ASPCA Advocacy Brigade and by spending much of the past several months in Harrisburg, the state capital, promoting the bill to legislators. Governor Ed Rendell signed HB 2525 into law the day after it was passed.

Milo is looking for a home

Much to our surprise, adorable Milo does not have a home yet.  This great little dog is only 20 lbs., is very friendly, sweet and lived with young kids.  He loves toys, running and playing with other dogs and fetching.  He's the size, age and temperament everyone tells us they want, so where is his new family?

A Star is Born

Rocco came to us as a very sick kitty who needed months of meds and had to spend his days in one of our isolation rooms. His mom fell in love with him snotty nose and all and he has been living like a king ever since. Today we learned he is also an award winner, after entering the Pet Life Radio "Cool Cat Contest" and ending up in the top five. The picture shows Rocco enjoying his winnings.

New Beagle

Today we took in Snoopy, an adorable Beagle. He is quiet, affectionate and an all-around nice dog.
